Co-Creator of TheHealthyWeighOut
Ashley L. Southard, Ph.D., LMFT, is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist specializing in the treatment of overeating and binge eating disorder, trauma, abuse/neglect, relationship problems, depression, anxiety, and related issues. Dr. Southard is the co-creator of TheHealthyWeighOut, and a clinical therapist at its sister organization, A New Beginning. Dr. Southard’s clinical experience includes providing outpatient therapy to individuals, couples, families, and groups from diverse backgrounds; developing clinical programs for specialized populations; and supervising student therapists.
Throughout the past decade, Dr. Southard has developed an expertise in the psychological treatment of eating disorders, nurturing her affinity for working with people affected by all types of disordered eating, including overeating, emotional eating, and binge eating disorder. She enjoys helping people get to the root of their dissatisfying eating behaviors, exploring why their disordered behaviors developed and how to take control of their emotional and physical wellbeing once and for all. With specialized training in the treatment of interpersonal attachments and relationships, and traumatic and distressing experiences, Dr. Southard is well-equipped to effectively guide clients through the healing process — helping them organize and understand their emotions, thoughts, and behaviors related to food; identify truly fulfilling ways to get their needs met; and ultimately establish a vibrant, confident relationship with their body and self.
While Dr. Ashley L. Southard‘s primary passion is working directly with clients, she also enjoys giving back to the community. Dr. Southard’s service to the community includes speaking engagements designed to educate professionals, parents, and youth about eating disorders. She has spoken at various venues, including National professional conferences, Arizona State University, Midwestern University, local high schools, and the 1st Annual NEDA Phoenix Walk. In 2006, Dr. Southard co-founded Eating Disorder Network (EDN) of Central Maryland, a non-profit organization devoted to serving individuals and families affected by eating disorders. In 2008, she accepted an invitation to serve as a founding board member of Binge Eating Disorder Association (BEDA). She has published a textbook chapter on the treatment of eating disorders, and has lobbied on Capitol Hill with the Eating Disorders Coalition (EDC), advocating for the passage of legislation that protects people from misguided obesity initiatives, like mandatory BMI reporting in public schools. She is currently an active member of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT) and volunteers as the Webmaster for both the Arizona Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AzAMFT) and the Arizona Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy community (AZ-EFT).
Dr. Ashley L. Southard, who has been board licensed since 2004, earned a Master’s degree in Couple and Family Therapy and a Doctoral degree in Family Science, both from the University of Maryland in College Park.
